[Patent assignment]. 1807.

In a document dated June 8, 1807, Barnes of New York City grants the right to make and use a machine for shearing cloth to Zepheniah Buffington, with the stipulation that these rights are only granted within Bristol County, Mass. Beriah Swift is identified as the original inventor, receiving letters patent May 25, 1806. He then conveyed his rights to Barnes.
